Preventing Equipment Errors on the Factory Floor

Workers' compensation insurance provides financial help to cover losses associated with employee injury on the job. Employee illness related to the job also usually has coverage here. On the factory floor, these risks are numerous. As a business owner, work to prevent errorsimage of machinery and risks that could lead to injury, illness, or death. Here are a few tips to help you do that.

Use OSHA for Guidelines

The most important first step is to ensure your location follows all OSHA guidelines for factory work spaces. This is a complex process. There are numerous guidelines to follow. Yet, there are training programs and tools available from the U.S. Department of Labor that can help you in this way. Your local health department can be an important resource in some situations as well.

Create Training Programs

Start by working to develop a team of experts. These are individuals on your workforce that learn the details of every piece of machinery on the factory floor. Some manufacturers provide training programs and safety lessons on the proper use of their equipment. These individuals need to learn what those proper methods are. This can limit your risks of seeing errors occur.

Many times, if one person starts to make an error using a piece of equipment, he or she passes that error on to anyone they train. By having a team of professionals with this type of insight and training in hand, you minimize these risks substantially.

Focus on Safety Daily

Never put other factors ahead of safety on the job. It can be easy to do this. You have a deadline and need to produce a specific amount of product by that time. Speed, though, can cause errors to occur. Be logical about getting the work done in a safe manner. What is realistic?

Discipline Matters

Make it a point to ensure safety is a priority. When someone makes an error, correct them. If they continue to do so, determine if they are being disruptive. Disciplinary action is sometimes necessary to keep your other employees safe. If an employee knows he or she is doing something wrong and does it anyway, you may still be responsible for the injuries it causes. Therefore, leave nothing to chance.

Your workers’ compensation provides financial protection to you. Yet, costs rise rapidly when factory-related injuries occur frequently. Work with a team to shore up the safety at your location.
